Gonneville is a complex and rapidly evolving proposal. Decisions, meetings, correspondence and new information can be difficult for ordinary residents to follow.

We’ll document what we learn, what remains unanswered, what our representatives and decision-makers are doing — and the questions our community is still asking.

Because ratepayers shouldn’t have to piece this together alone.

WHO IS LOOKING OUT FOR CHITTERING?

Last week, Chittering residents attended Council with detailed questions about the proposed Gonneville Project and what it could mean for our district.

We received responses, but in many cases, we do not believe we received answers to the questions actually asked.

A recurring theme was that the mine itself is in the Shire of Toodyay and many matters sit with State and Commonwealth authorities. We understand that. But potential impacts do not stop at a local government boundary.

Infrastructure associated with Gonneville is proposed through Chittering, through or alongside people's homes and the final haulage route has still not been made public, despite the Shire having received information from Chalice about a proposed route through Chittering.

We acknowledge that the Shire has written to State and Federal Ministers raising concerns, and we welcome that. But we believe Chittering needs strong, ongoing advocacy as this project progresses.

The Shire has a stronger voice and greater access to the proponent, government agencies and decision-makers than individual ratepayers do. We would like to see that influence used consistently to seek answers, push for transparency and protect the interests of the community it represents.

Obtaining clear and detailed information directly from Chalice has also been difficult. It should not fall to volunteer ratepayers to piece together company announcements, government documents, approval processes and correspondence simply to understand what is being proposed for their own district.

We would like to see regular Gonneville updates from the Shire, greater transparency around information affecting Chittering, and continued pressure on Chalice to hold an open community meeting where residents can ask questions and hear the answers together.

At the heart of this is the future of Chittering Valley.

Our community group does not want to see the Valley progressively industrialised by mining related infrastructure and heavy vehicle movements.

We will continue asking questions and sharing what we learn.
